Indira Devi became Maharani of Cooch by marriage and by choice. She was a very strong woman.
Born in the 19th century, her parents had arranged her marriage during her childhood. But not to the man she ultimately married. At the age of 18, she broke this arrangement by writing a letter to her fiancé and married the man of her choice. The wedding was held in London, with no one from her family present.
In 1922, her husband died at a very early age. Not only did she have five young children, but she also faced a deserted throne. Since she was not raised to be a ruling monarch, she was expected to possess only mediocre administrative skills. Yet again, she proved strong and intelligent, and soon adapted to her new role. Indira filled the gap with verve and grace from 1922 until 1936, when her son succeeded her as ruler.
