THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS

In 1926, the American Vogue published Coco Chanel’s creation. After WW1, a lot of women were widows and therefore expected to wear black. Those black dresses were typically far from elegant and not practical for all those women who now did men’s jobs. Chanel already recognized the requirements of modern times in her early years. Most women had to live on a budget and could not afford as many different dresses as they might have wished for.

For this reason, she designed the little black dress as an elegant, yet comfortable item of clothing in which a woman would look great even if she does not possess a model figure or a large budget. Coco Chanel called it «A kind of uniform».

The images above show how different these «uniforms.» can be. One shows Chanel’s original form 1926 and the other one features the lovely Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly. This little black dress has been created by Hubert Givenchy.
